TradeMark Express asked:

What is the definition of a press release? Is a press release technically an article that contains new information about your product or service? Or can a press release be an article that discusses general information pertaining to your product or service? I guess I’m just a little confused as to the difference between a press release & an article. Any guidance is appreciated — thank you!

A press release is the information that has been slated to be given to the news media. Basically, information that has been checked by an attorney for accuracy etc., and okayed to be relayed to the media, so the public can know about it.

A news release or press release is a written or recorded communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something claimed as having news value. Typically, it is mailed or faxed to assignment editors at newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television stations, and/or television networks. Commercial newswire services are also used to distribute news releases. Sometimes news releases are sent for the purpose of announcing news conferences.

A Press Release (concerning a company) can give information about a company, its products and its activities. It is organized within the context of PR (Public Relations) and communication activities (which are marketing functions). Because of the type of the communication, a press release is not an advertisement because it is free (that is the difference between publicity and advertisement, the former is free and the later paid).

Examples of press releases may be:
    - A social responsibility initiative (e.g. a campaign against drugs)
    - An upcoming event (e.g. an educational seminar for dentist by a toothpaste manufacturer)
